Chongxu

Chongxu (simplified: 冲虚, traditional: 沖虛, pinyin: Chōngxū, jyutping: cung1 heoi1) was a Taoist priest of Shangqing Monastery and junior disciple of Tianxu.

Biography

Chongxu was a member of the Shangqing Monastery, a Taoist institution known for its martial arts traditions. He served as a junior disciple under Tianxu, who was one of the senior members of the monastery.

The Shangqing Monastery was involved in various events throughout the jianghu, and Chongxu, along with other disciples such as Lingxu, Zhaoxu, and Tongxu, participated in the monastery’s activities and missions.

Martial arts abilities

As a disciple of Shangqing Monastery, Chongxu was trained in the Shangqing Swordplay, the signature martial arts style of the monastery. This style was known for its speed and precision, making practitioners formidable opponents in combat.

Behind the scenes

Chongxu is a minor character in Ode to Gallantry, representing one of the disciples of Shangqing Monastery. His name follows the naming convention of the monastery, where disciples had names ending with “xu” (虚), meaning “void” or “emptiness” in Taoist philosophy.

The character’s name, “Chongxu” (冲虚), meaning “Rushing Void” or “Flowing Emptiness,” reflects Taoist concepts of emptiness and non-being, which are central to Taoist philosophy and martial arts practice.
